North Carolina Cities on the U.S. Civil Rights Trail
Attendees will experience Greensboro, North Carolina’s third-largest city, which was known for denim. In 1960, four college freshmen put it on the map as the launchpad of the sit-in movement. With the Proximity Hotel as home base, visit the site of their nonviolent protest at the International Civil Rights Center and Museum, along with former Green Book motel, The Historic Magnolia House. Other highlights include a walking tour of historical downtown Greensboro and N.C. A&T University’s February One monument, which honors the four alumni who propelled a national movement with the Woolworth sit-in.
A city with no racial majority, Durham reveals surprising twists in its civil rights story. With the Durham Marriott City Center as home base, wander Durham’s Black Wall Street, sample some of the area’s finest Black-owned restaurants, and attend the Confronting Change exhibit at the Carolina Theatre. Taking “no” for an answer was not an option for the heroes that lined Durham streets in peaceful protest in the 1960s. This exhibit tells the story of the desegregation of the theater and the people dedicated to making certain their community had equal access for all.

Moravian Culinary & History
Old Salem was settled some 250-plus years ago in 1766 by the Moravians, a devout, religious group originally from Eastern Europe. Today, Old Salem Museums & Gardens is a unique living history site. While the name “Old Salem” implies the town’s rich and immersive history, the spirit of the Moravians and their inventiveness lives on today with new and exciting initiatives.
The city’s culinary roots also date back to the arrival of the Moravians. They brought what has now become one of Winston-Salem’s most iconic tastes: Moravian Sugar Cakes, the thinly sliced ginger-spiked Moravian cookies (now available in many flavors); Love Feast Buns; Moravian Chicken Pies; and assorted pickles and German-style foods, which you’ll get to savor and sample along The Moravian Culinary Trail. Overnight accommodations for this tour will be at The Historic Brookstown Inn.

Winston-Salem beckons with its architectural evolution, where abandoned warehouses and mills have been beautifully reborn as world-class research facilities, and treasured historic buildings are given new life as sophisticated boutique hotels and award-winning restaurants.
